Exhibit opening: Crisis in the Credit System & Popular Unrest

The opening reception of “Crisis in the Credit System & Popular Unrest” on Thursday, March 8 at the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery offered the first look at an installation which provides both “absurd and practical” reactions to the complete collapse of finance globally. The exhibition is split up into a multi-part video narrative spread throughout the gallery, which can be listened to through headphones that sense the listener’s movement, syncing up the sound corresponding to the videos.
An interesting facet of the exhibition is its layout: the whole gallery is set up like a traditional office space. Each section of the film is divided by padded cubicles, the floor is covered by bland carpeting and dim fluorescent lights guide you through the rooms. If you’ve got some time, the exhibition is definitely worth visiting. The plausible and implausible reactions to the collapse of the economic system give viewers a glimpse into a future that may not be entirely removed from the reality they occupy.
This exhibition runs until April 8 at The Justina M. Barnicke Gallery in Hart House. Gallery Hours are: Monday–Wednesday and Friday, 11 am to 5 pm, Thursday 11 am to 7 pm, and Saturday–Sunday 1 pm to 5 pm.
