This September, UTSC’s Centre for French and Linguistics plans to introduce a new minor, focusing on teaching students how to translate written English to Chinese.

The minor will accommodate 30 students in its first year. The centre hopes to develop programs for Chinese to English translation in the future.

Chinese is currently the third most commonly used language in Canada. Mandarin Chinese is the most commonly spoken language in the world.

“This program prepares top students who want to go into graduate study in this field because it equips them with both theoretical and practical skills,” said senior linguistics lecturer Helen Wu in an interview with U of T News.

The minor will also prepare students for later translation accreditation in Canada and China.
