A recent article in The Varsity newspaper, written by student Jessica Afonso and presented as an “Op-ed,” contained serious and inaccurate allegations about people and processes at the University of St. Michael’s College. Student politics can at times be messy and students are certainly entitled to their opinions about it. However they are not entitled to make unsubstantiated attacks. Furthermore, it is inappropriate and disappointing for The Varsity to give a platform to such claims under the protective umbrella of its editorial page. The University of St. Michael’s College encourages open and respectful debate on the issues facing our community, however we expect that such discussions will be held according to the highest standards of fairness and mutual respect.
