An anti-tuition hike student protest in Montreal turned violent after at least two Montreal city police officers acted aggressively towards the protesters.
A YouTube video shows an officer repeatedly striking a male protester with his baton while another officer is seen shoving a female protester to the ground outside the Montreal Education Department building. The students were protesting against a $325 tuition rise over the next five years.
The Montreal Police department have launched an internal inquiry investigating the incident.
Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, spokesperson of L’Association pour une solidarité syndicale étudiante, one of Quebec’s largest student lobby groups, told CTV News that the students were peacefully protesting and the violence was a ‘totally impulsive gesture” of the police.
