U of T ranks as the best university in Canada, according to the findings of QS World University Rankings by Subject.

The university’s place at the top of the charts was due in part to its prodigious research output, second only to Harvard.

U of T was best-in-class in 21 out of 29 disciplines in Canada. The environmental studies, modern languages and English literature programs were all judged among the top ten in the world.

Academic rankings have frequently included U of T among the finest academic institutions in the world. Recently, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings pegged the university as the 19th best in the world.

Canadian universities generally did well in the QS rankings, with six universities nationwide offering programs that placed in the top 30. Behind U of T in the rankings were UBC and McGill.

“These rankings provide great news for Canada, pointing to world-class departments in a range of discipline areas,” said Ben Sowter, head of research at QS in a statment.

Rankings by subject are compiled annually based on research citations, interviews and data collected from 50,000 academics and employers.
