Organizers of the 2015 Pan Am Games have unveiled the winning bid for a multi-million dollar aquatic facility to be built at the University of Toronto Scarborough campus.
A joint project between design firm NORR Ltd. and developer-contractor PCL Constructions Canada, the 300,000 square foot sports centre is expected to cost $158.8 million and will include a diving well, two Olympic sized pools, gymnasiums, a fitness centre and an indoor running track.
UTSC students voted in a 2010 referendum to contribute $30 million to the project in the form of a special levy. In exchange, the university will become a co-owner of the facility along with the City once construction is completed. The remainder of construction costs are being provided by the municipal and federal governments.
The facility will be located next to the current UTSC campus atop a former landfill. Lead designer David Clusiau told The Globe and Mail that his design will reflect the sloping, glacially-inflected landscape of southern Ontario.
