University of Toronto student Rafsan Alam was killed on October 20, when he was hit by a truck that was allegedly fleeing the scene of a robbery. Alam was a student at the University of Toronto Scarborough campus, finishing a Bachelor’s degree in business administration. That evening, he had stopped at a coffee shop near Eglinton Avenue and Kennedy Road to buy some pastries for his sister, who was due to arrive from London. While crossing Kennedy Road, he was struck by the truck; the driver fled the scene.
Police arrested Anthony Sowkey, a 24-year-old Toronto man, on the day of the incident. Sowkey faces a total of six charges, including armed robbery and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death. His bail hearing is set for October 29.
