The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team dominated the Nippissing Lakers en route to a 3–0 victory.
The Blues maintained a lead through the majority of their home opener; their first victory was never in doubt. Coach Kristine Drakich was effusive in her praise of how the team competed: “I was very happy with our effort overall; we played our game, our rhythm, our tempo.”
The Blues held a considerable size advantage over the Lakers, and as a result dominated them at the net throughout the game to the tune of 38 kills. “We owned the space really well. We came out really strong and did a really good job sustaining it throughout,” said fourth-year player Sarah Chapin.
The Lakers did their best to keep up with the Blues, despite being outmatched physically. Their effort and teamwork were evident throughout the game, and they were rewarded by a slight increase in points in every game. After putting up a good fight, they finished the first set 25–11, the second 25–13, and the third with a three-point jump to 25–16.
The effort level culminated for the Lakers in a 6–4 lead in the third game. However, after a timeout, the Blues dominated once again, quickly taking back the lead.
On the late hiccup, coach Drakich noted: “We lost our focus momentarily, but we got back on track and played our game.” Chapin wasn’t concerned about the lead change either: “We weren’t fazed by it at all. We just stuck to our game and let it resolve itself.”
The Blues women’s volleyball team finished the weekend with a 3–0 loss to the York Lions.
