The newly released cover album paying tribute to Jack White’s music from over the past ten years is, to say the least, unique. Generally, we are accustomed to the concept of a young, newly discovered artist paying tribute to whichever musical pioneer inspired him or her most, but in Rockin’ Legends Pay Tribute To Jack White cover album, the tables are turned. Thoroughly aged rock-a-billy heroes from Wanda Jackson to Gary U.S. Bonds come together to recreate 14 tracks worth of White’s hits and as expected, they nail it.
The self-proclaimed queen of rock-a-billy, Wanda Jackson, provides a heavy opening to the album with “In the Cold, Cold Night” — a dark and sinister track that Jackson delivers with delightfully spine-chilling vocals, and the low rumble of church organs that nicely fill out the sound. From there, the album charges full-speed into the fast-paced blues of “I’m Shakin,” a style we most commonly associated with Jack White, redone by saxophonist Big Jay McNeely and Nik Turner. The album only gets better with 74-year-old Gary U.S. Bonds’ hard hitting version of “Salute Your Solution,” and comes off a strong reminder that Jack White is the twenty-first century King of Rock.
