The first 12 seconds of Warpaint’s self-titled sophomore album take off with the same purring ferocity as a woman scooping her hair into a high top-knot — you know she’s about to kick ass.
The band has opted for a slightly heavier sound this time, but it’s a tweak that serves front woman Theresa Wayman’s Casper-the-Friendly-Ghost-meets-Jessica-Rabbit vocals well, although she still maintains her characteristically brooding tone throughout. The overall effect is deeper and richer than the band’s former sound; it screams “sexy” with purpose.
Combine this with Wayman’s recent suggestion that “playing music can take you closer to that same kind of state of ecstasy as an orgasm,” and by the time the album reaches the lead single, “Love is to Die,” we can’t help but wonder if it’s really la petite morte she’s crooning about.
