our years after releasing Champ, alt-pop powerhouse Tokyo Police Club (TPC) returns with Forcefield. But does this “bootyvicious” (yes, that’s how they described the record to me) LP solidify these Newmarket rockers as more than a group we leave fondly behind in our memories of the 2000s?
The band answers this immediately, opening with the eight minute epic “Argentina.” The energy continues on tracks like “Gonna Be Ready,” TPC’s heaviest song to date. Forcefield also dives further into pop territory than ever before with “Hot Tonight.”
Though unexpected, this is no cause for alarm. The penultimate track,”Through The Wire,” is an absolute standout. Monks and company sought to avoid specific musical trends that ultimately came and went since 2010 and create something enduring with Forcefield. While it is a shame that the album contains only nine songs, Tokyo Police Club succeeds in proving themselves a force (field?) to be reckoned with.
