Job Description — Appointed Directors
Varsity Publications is seeking dedicated and qualified individuals to serve as Appointed Directors on the corporation’s board. Varsity Publications is a not-for-profit corporation that publishes The Varsity, the University of Toronto’s student newspaper. Its board of directors is elected annually by its student-members to govern and oversee the corporation. Appointed Directors support the board by providing advice, experience, and perspective.
This is a volunteer position.
Number of positions: 2
Term: May 2025– April 2026
Commitment: Come prepared to monthly board meetings, bi-annual meetings of members, and periodical committee meetings.
An ideal candidate will:
- Not be a member of the corporation or a current U of T student
- Hold a Bachelor’s Degree
- Have experience working in journalism at the managerial or governance level, and/or demonstrate an interest in journalism
- Have experience working with a student newspaper or other major student organization
- Have experience serving on a board of directors or similar body
- Have expertise working with, drafting, and revising by-laws and policies for a not-for-profit corporation, major student group, or similar organization
- Have experience working with the Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act
- Demonstrate outstanding oral and written communication, critical thinking and analysis, and the ability to work effectively in a team
- Have a proven record of dependability, trustworthiness, and maintaining the confidentiality
- Be available to serve more than one consecutive term if requested
