A little Blue in the big leagues

It’s official! A former Blues football player has made it to the CFL. Bluesalumnus Gabe Robinson played for U of T from 1998-2002 and was twicenamed to the OUA all-star second team at defensive end. He’s recently survived threerounds of cuts to make it on to the Toronto Argonauts roster for the 2003season. Robinson is expected to be a backup defensive end, but will see regularduty on special teams where he is known for his big hits and enthusiasticstyle of play. He led the OUA in 2000 with a total of five QB sacks during the regular season. Robinson was originally signed by the Argos as a free agentback in February.

“I would not say I was intimidated when I found out I made the team,” said the new recruit. “Overwhelmed would be more accurate.” But the validation of turning pro hasn’t gone to Robinson’s head. Instead, he only has sound advice for dealing with the pressure of competing at such a high level: “I keep telling myself all I can do is go out and play football.” Well, it’s worked so far…

A punt away: Blues kicker a CFL hopeful

Rumour has it that the BC Lions and the Toronto Argonauts have recently shown interest in Varsity Blues kicker and fifth year computer science student George Chilakos. The two CFL teams approached Chilakos following his strong performance in the national all-star East-West Bowl held May 10, where he scored the East’s only points. After failing to be directly drafted in this, his first eligible year, Chilakos is confident in his chances for a future contract. The veteran kicker led the Canadian Interuniversity Sport league this past season in field goal percentages, making 78 per cent of his attempts. If only he can increase his punts from an average of 38 yards to an average of 42 yards, Chilakos believes that he should get signed to a CFL team.
