SAC, UTSC still together
Re: The honeymoon’s over: SAC and Scarborough student union set to split (Oct. 27)
I would like to correct the language reporter Sarah Barmak used when describing the situation UTSC students are facing with regards to the upcoming referendum on UTSC student representation. The title of Barmak’s article suggests that SAC and SCSU are preparing to “split.” This is nothing further from the truth. Rather, the equal partnership illustrated in the SAC-SCSU Memorandum of Agreement is a consolidation of representation at UTSC of both SAC and SCSU; which is in effect, more than anything, a “marriage.”
Student leaders from both organizations see this arrangement as one of mutual benefit since both SAC and SCSU will now be able to concentrate fully on their respective local campus issues. Let me be abundantly clear-SAC is not pulling out of UTSC. This is a restructuring of our resources at UTSC so that UTSC students will be better represented. It will end decades of confusion between overlapping services and advocacy that are offered by both SAC and SCSU. Ultimately, a new totally restructured organization taking on the SCSU name will emerge that will work fully in tandem with SAC on tri-campus issues.

Don’t give Gallo all the credit
Re: U of T AIDS Symposium searches for a solution (Oct. 27)
While I love and appreciate the fact that HIV/AIDS is finally taking a position in the U of T spotlight, this article has left me with a bad taste in my mouth due to its profile of Robert Gallo. While it is true that Dr. Gallo has made great contributions to HIV/AIDS research, calling him the “discoverer” of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus is grossly incorrect. Dr. Luc Montagnier and his team at the Pasteur Institute in France are the true discoverers of HIV, and even if Bronwyn Kienapple wanted to avoid any mention of the controversy surrounding the discovery of HIV, she should have at very least referred to Dr. Gallo as a “co-discoverer” and made mention of Dr. Montagnier.

Not our mistake
I was appalled to see quotation of Prof. Finkelstein that “I am safe with Hamas” and that he stayed with a Hamas member on Oct 30th issue of the Newspaper. I was present at the debate on Oct. 27th and can testify with confidence that Prof. Finkelstein NEVER uttered those words.
