What old boys’ club?
Re: Student union or sexist playground (Jan. 29)

I realize that the fact that I am male may disqualify my opinion as being worthy in the eyes of some, but when my gender is accused of various actions, I believe that I have the right to defend myself and, to some extent, my gender.

If Ms. Artful-Dodger has a problem with the number of women elected to office in various areas at U of T, then she needs to address the right issues. If only three women ran for a position with the SAC executive, then she should lay blame with the lethargic female population, not some vague, faceless “old boys’ club.”

Regarding the incident that she describes at a local pub, I would point out that there was nothing illegal in the actions of the students she mentions; the comments she claims to have overheard may have been foolish, but there was nothing illegal in it. The only criminal act that I see was a bar employee serving alcohol to an obviously drunk patron. Considering that his manager had already told him not to serve her anymore, then the employee should probably be let go.

One thing I did not notice about either the bar incident or the allegedly overheard conversation: Ms. Artful-Dodger doing anything about it. If she was there and did not make a protest, either to the two talkers or to the people at the bar, then why should anyone else? If something bothers you, do something about it right there and then. Don’t just leave it for fodder for a letter to the editor.

If Ms. Artful-Dodger has problems with some people at the university, that is her concern. Not everybody is going to get along or share similar views. However, making general complaints with vaguely sexist paranoid claims about “old boys’ clubs” does no one any good.

Lighten up, Dodger
Re: Student union or sexist playground (Jan. 29)

I was tired of being spoken for by people like Liz Majic when she did it, and I’m still tired of it.

I can’t believe Ms. Artful-Dodger is dragging up THAT stale old debate. As fucking if. Dear reader, this is the same person who changed her name to “Artful-Dodger” and expects to be taken seriously. What more do I really have to say?

One of many points that Ms Artful-Dodger fails to realize is that we’re all adults here (except maybe some of the frosh) and we’re all allowed to think, talk and joke about sex.

Lighten up.

Plus, I don’t know about the other women out there, but I find a lot of student politics irrelevant. Maybe all the other politically-minded female students don’t want to waste their time with the big-fish small-pond cesspool that she wallows in.
