Governing Council budget frozen-money still flows but committee members shiver anyway
A chill descended on Tuesday afternoon’s meeting of U of T’s Governing Council Planning and Budget Committee, literally.
“While I have the floor,” said committee member Philip Byer, huddling at the end of the boardroom table, “I’m really glad that the university is saving money by not turning the heat on until it drops to freezing.” Other members around the room nodded in agreement, clutching their arms and shivering, even though it was 26 degrees outside.
“It’s to keep you awake,” cracked David Mock, sitting several seats over.
A few minutes later, Mr. Byer piped up again.
“I’ve now been told that it’s cold because the air conditioner is on, so we’re actually wasting money now.”
Governing Council secretary Cristina Oke crossed the room and peered at the thermostat, but didn’t change it. The meeting adjourned shortly thereafter.
