Now, sports fans, is the perfect time to take in some sports action at the Athletic Centre, especially since the NHL is non-existent and the weather is below freezing. This weekend two sports give the sports connoisseur a pleasant decision to make and a little variety to sample.
The first option is men’s and women’s basketball on Friday and Saturday. The women’s team plays at 6:00 p.m. on both days, and their opponents will be Royal Military College and Queen’s, respectively. The men’s team plays the same schools on the same nights, but they begin play at 8:00 p.m.
The women’s team is currently the top-seeded team in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East division, while the men are fifth in their respective grouping. The women are coming off two wins last weekend, while the men went 1-1 last Saturday and Sunday.
The other option this weekend is the OUA squash championship, which gets rolling at 9:30 on Saturday morning. At that time the defending champion women’s team will host Western in the semi-final match. At 11:45 a.m. the men’s team, who are looking to improve on their second place finish from last year, will play in their semi-final against Queen’s.
This season the women’s team are once again the top-ranked team in the province. On the other hand, the men are ranked third in the OUA, behind Western and Queen’s.
Western is definitely the team to beat on the men’s side, as they have won each of the last 21 OUA squash championships.
