Merica Joy Carlos (Build Back Better)

Merica Joy Carlos is a fourth-year student majoring in communication, culture, information, and technology and minoring in visual culture and communication and cinema studies. She is running unopposed for the vice-president university affairs position in the University of Toronto Mississauga Students’ Union under the Build Back Better slate.

In an interview with The Varsity, Carlos highlighted that “a sense of community means a lot to [her].” She expressed that the need to build community at UTM has motivated her to run for this year’s elections.

If elected, Carlos and her team plan to implement “a job readiness support [system]” in collaboration with academic societies, the dean of academics, and the Career Centre, to create opportunities for students transitioning into the professional field.

Carlos said that she is very passionate about this plan, noting that “as a current fourth-year student, finding a job in the market is really hard right now.”

Carlos will also work to develop UTM’s first undergraduate research symposium to “allow students to display the research they have done and… network and connect with others in academia.”

The voting period for UTMSU elections will run from March 16–18.
