Sana Ali, the vice-president, external candidate for the Renew slate has forfeited the UTSU election. Ali, who put in a strong performance at last week’s executive all-candidates debate, made the announcement via an open letter to Team Renew on Facebook. She cited “attempts to squash dissent and individuality within the team” and “desire to suppress any kind of communication I may have with the ‘opposition’, even at times when it was completely civil and benevolent” among her reasons for he decision.

Ali, stressed that “the UTSU and this team are made up of some very well-intentioned and progressive people,” but noted that “the reality is that the people who have consistently voiced complaint about the UTSU are the ones who have worked most closely with it.” Ali is currently co-president of the U of T chapter of Because I Am a Girl.

Current vice-president, university affairs and Renew presidential candidate Munib Sajjad was unavailable for comment immediately, as he was campaigning at UTM.
