Alcoholism is known for being hard to treat. However, a recent review of data from various independent studies between 1966 and 1970 shows that a single dose of the powerful hallucinogen lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) could be used to prevent alcoholism. Researchers found that using LSD in combination with alcohol-focused treatment programs significantly reduced alcohol abuse. Fifty-nine per cent of patients in the LSD condition versus 38 per cent of controls reported diminished alcohol abuse during their first follow-up assessments, ranging from one to 12 months after discharge.
