We’ve come a long way

Smokers were threatened this week by a motion put forth to Governing Council that called for the banning of cigarette use inside the classroom. The Non-Smoker’s Rights Association made the appeal on health grounds, advocating for those with allergies or lung conditions. But members were hesitant to ask other students and professors to stop smoking for fear of ostracism. One member remarked: “When you tell them that you’re allergic to tobacco smoke they say, ‘You’re kidding,’ and blow smoke into your face until you have an allergy attack…”

Suds cease at Hart House

Anyone wondering why U of T is without a truly universal campus pub needs look no further than a stabbing incident that took place this week in 1985 outside Cheek’s Pub at the Hart House Arbour Room. The popular Hart House pub was “discontinued until further notice” after the incident that sent five people to hospital, two with stab wounds. U of T police were heavily criticized for their inexplicably slow response time. Not even SAC Services Commissioner Iggy Pitt’s promise that “Everybody will be carded, absolutely everybody, regardless if they have grey hair and are carrying a cane” could resurrect the pub, and students were left looking for liquid nourishment off-site.
