On Tuesday, U of T’s Governing Council approved the expansion of the Rotman School of Management. According to Rotman dean Roger Martin, honchos at the business school wish to expand and increase its prominence as a centre for business research. A 10- to 13-storey building will be constructed on the site south of the Rotman building, which currently houses the Sexual Education and Peer Counseling Centre and CIUT-FM, and contains a parking lot. The proposed addition will cost $92 million, $20 million of it expected to come from donations.

When the Rotman expansion was announced earlier this year, students raised concerns about the forced relocation of SEC and CIUT, saying these two organizations serve a much larger community than the Rotman School. These misgivings were hardly mentioned at the Governing Council’s meeting, and the Council voted unanimously in favour of Rotman’s growth. Before construction starts in 2009, CIUT will have to give up its current location in the heart of campus and move to a smaller facility on McCaul St. SEC’s new location has yet to be decided.
